Pipasa Documentary Review

 Date: December 14, 2023

PIPASA" documentary vividly illustrates the challenges faced by the people of the Thar Desert as they grapple with the scarcity of waterThe Thar Desert, a vast expanse of arid land, is home to millions of people who have been facing an increasingly severe water crisis in recent years. Factors like climate change, overgrazing, and population growth have contributed to the growing threat that looms over the lives of those residing in this region. "PIPASA," a documentary film by Rajat Sain and Roohani, presents a poignant and detailed overview of the water crisis in the Barmer region of the Thar Desert. This article aims to explore the causes and impact of the water crisis and shed light on the efforts being made to address this pressing issue.

Women in these areas try to collect water from pits where water gets accumulated due to damaged pipelines. In many rural areas, the situation has remained the same since Independence. Every year, plans are made for summer season, but nothing changes on the ground. The state government’s project to connect these villages is going on, but it will take many years.

The condition of Bhachbhar village, 45km from Barmer district headquarters currently reeling under a temperature of around 45°C, is pathetic as women lead their entire lives collecting water from pits with nobody to listen to their woes. They start collecting water around 7am and the process continues till late evening. The government so far has not announced any scheme for this area.

Villagers are forced to quench their thirst with murky water and family members often get into fights when their turn comes to fetch water. Villager Manohardas Ramwat questioned how will the government’s advisory of washing hands be followed when there is no water to drink.
Thus, other states of India are giving height of development while on the other hand, Barmer district of Rajasthan does not even have access to water, a common requirement of human life.
" A Documentary on India's Water Crisis in Barmer, Rajasthan" offers readers an enlightening journey through the heart of a parched region, compelling them to reflect on their own role in preserving the planet's most precious resource – water. It is a must-read for anyone concerned about environmental issues, social justice, and the collective responsibility to safeguard our shared future.

Thank you.
